Imagine speaking with your surgeon about a life-altering procedure about to take place and throughout this conversation you come to notice that he cannot speak in fluent, grammatically correct sentences. Would this have an effect on your ability to trust this man with your life in his hands? Although this individual had went through immense training to be in the position he is in, his inability to effectively speak would surely leave anyone second-guessing his professionalism.- Getty Images
I believe that university English is a course that should be required for all university due to the importance it has in any field of work, whether that be a mechanic, doctor, or teacher. Language is an important part of any career, some meaning the difference between life and death. Your image as an overall professional can be impacted by your language skills, although English as a language is not what surgeons are to study in university they are expected to know how to properly communicate with their patients and inform them of procedures. The ability to clearly get an idea across is a skill needed in an career even outside of university, this skill is crucial before any other education in other fields.
While researching this topic, I found an article that perfectly captured the importance of a decent skill of language as a business owner. One of the points that Cecile made that I had not thought of was the importance of grammar and revision of writing in terms of avoiding lawsuits, for example misspellings or grammar mistakes in the writing of instructions for a product could lead to the misuse of this product possibly leading to injury. In this circumstance, not only has a person injured themselves due to your lack of language skill, but your business is sure to be discredited.
Having a basic understanding of language should definitely be a prerequisite for an university course as any career gained will surely have an effect on others. A basic skill in English allows for efficiency, professionalism, and clarity.
